Everything you need to get your visa approved — simplified.
1. Before You Apply
- Receive an unconditional offer from a licensed UK university/college
- Obtain your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
- Check your course details: start date, tuition fees, course duration
- Take an approved English Language Test in all 4 components (reading, writing, speaking and listening) of at least:
- (i) level B2, where studying a course at UK bachelor’s degree level or above; or
- (ii) level B1, where studying a pre-sessional course or a course below UK bachelor’s degree level; or
- (iii) have a GCSE level qualification or above in Welsh, Scots Gaelic, or Irish language.
2. Financial Requirements
- Tuition fees for the first year
- Living expenses for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months (£1483 /month in London, £1136/month outside London)
- Exempt from showing living expenses funds if applying at Residential Independent School
- Funds held in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days unless relying on a student loan, an award from a government or international sponsorship agency, or where they are receiving some portion of the funds or other financial sponsorship from their student sponsor (as a bursary, for example)
- Translations of financial documents not in English
3. Document Checklist
- Valid passport
- CAS letter
- Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, etc.)
- Evidence of meeting the financial requirements
- TB test certificate (if required by your country)
- Consent letter from parents (if under 18)
4. Application Process
- Apply online at gov.uk/student-visa
- Pay visa application fee: £524
- Pay Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776/year (under 18), £1,035/year (18+)
- Book and attend biometric appointment
- Be available for interview (if contacted)
5. After Submission
- Track application status
- Wait for decision (usually 3 weeks)
- Receive E visa and travel document
- Prepare for travel (flights, accommodation, orientation documents)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting documents not translated into English
- Presenting insufficient funds
- Incomplete or inaccurate application details
- Waiting too long after receiving CAS
